Environmental

SOLV – Project Oregon: Local cleanup and environmental projects.

SOLV has several local projects available throughout the year. See a step-by-step process on how to get involved in your own community project or to sign up for an existing project online. This is an excellent choice for churches, ministries, businesses or other organizations that want to improve their local community through restoration, cleanup, enhancement and/or beautification efforts.

Schools

Most communities have schools that need help in the areas of grounds cleanup, general maintenance, and/or classroom aid. These schools offer an excellent opportunity for churches, businesses, nonprofits or other organizations to get involved in their local community.

Involvement can range from helping clean up the grounds during an “emphasis weekend” to longer-term commitments such as providing tutoring assistance. The most effective way to get involved is to have your organization's leader, pastor, or the parent of a child attending the school, meet with the principal to discuss the school's specific needs.

Hunger/Poverty

Summer Food Program

When school breaks for the summer, many children from low-income families wonder if they'll get lunch. Now there are more than 400 sites in Oregon where children ages 1 through 18 can get a free meal and have some fun together during the summer.

Opportunities abound for churches, ministries, businesses or other organizations to get involved. New sites may be sponsored, help may be lent at existing sites, or programs for the children being fed at the sites may be created. There is a significant need for help in the tri-county area. It is suggested that planning for this summer activity begin well in advance.

Homelessness

Project 1: The Luis Palau Association and the City of Portland are partnering to house Project Homeless Connect at Portland CityFest on August 22 and 23, 2008. Portland Homeless Connect puts homeless people in touch with critical services in a “one stop” venue. Individuals are welcome to serve as part of the PHC/Portland CityFest steering committee prior to the event.

Project 2: The Luis Palau Association encourages you to partner with the City of Portland to assist the formerly homeless in retaining their housing and reintegrating into the community. A small group from your church, business, nonprofit or other organization can get involved by serving as short-term mentors in structured relationships with the formerly homeless.

Medical/Dental

Compassion Connections are free one-day clinics and social service fairs for low income residents of Greater Portland. These clinics are designed to meet individual needs by providing medical, dental, vision, chiropractic, and social services. Compassion Clinics will take place in as many as five metro area locations during the spring and summer of 2008.

*In order to qualify as a "Season of Service" project, the activity must directly meet a tangible need in the life of another person or group of people in the community. Decisions regarding project qualification are within the sole discretion of the Luis Palau Association and are not subject to review.

CityFest, the Season of Service, the Luis Palau Association and World Wide Open do not allow project postings for purposes of fundraising, advocacy or any reason other than disseminating information about qualified Season of Service projects. Postings of nonqualified projects will be removed.
